historic homestead

“AGRICULTURE IS THE MOST HEALTHFUL, MOST USEFUL AND

MOST NOBLE EMPLOYMENT OF MAN.”

— President George Washington

We are humbled that Marylands Farm Park is part of the first farm in New Haven, on the eastern portion of land granted to Jesse Adams by President John Quincy Adams in 1825. After Jesse’s property was divided, the new owner erected the stately 1870s brick farmhouse. It is a remarkably elegant example of Italianate architecture to have been the home of a small-town farmer of that era, signaling a pride of ownership and sense of standing in the community. Over time, the barn and the other structures were added, and from this homestead the land has been farmed for the last 150 years.

our plans

Though the homestead will not be accessible to visitors during Phase 1 of park development, you will immediately catch a glimpse of the unforgettable dwelling as you enter the park, along with the beauty of the rich, rural farm heritage that the homestead has so carefully preserved for more than a century. The historic homestead of Marylands Farm Park will pass to the New Haven Parks & Recreation Department in future years and be integrated as another prominent piece of the park experience.
